image1Robert Tate was hired as Head Boys Basketball coach at Horizon Science Academy in 2014 after a three year stint as Head Girls Coach at Horizon Science. Creating a basketball community at Horizon Science Academy has been the goal for Coach Tate since he started coaching at the school in 2010. As the girls coach, Coach Tate accumulated a record of 29-53. Since taking over the boys program the boys have compiled a 26-44 record. In 2014 in his first season as boys coach they won their first tournament game since 2012.

Coach Tate is also the Head Boys and Girls Cross Country coach and Asst.Track Coach in charge of distance runners. This will be his third season as coach. Every year the team has improved and more runners are starting to participate. The goal in cross country is to beat your personal best every day. By doing this you do not let yourself down or your teammates.

Another role Coach Tate has taken on is starting competitive sports at the middle school level. Right now basketball is real successful but Coach Tate is hoping to get soccer and volleyball started soon.

One thing that is important to the success of the program is success of the student in the classroom. Developing middle school students to high school students and high school students to college students is a goal for Coach Tate. Preaching “being responsible for your actions “is the goal that he wants his players to reach. Making student athletes responsible not entitled is the goal at Horizon Science Academy.

Coach Tate teaches Character Education at the middle school. He also teaches 6th grade Social Studies. Coach Tate got his Bachelor’s degree from Union Institute and his Masters from Grand Canyon University.

Coach Tate lives in Reynoldsburg, Ohio but was raised in Zanesville, Ohio. He has two sons Kevin and Keenan. He also has a handsome grandson named Mathias.
